Former metropolitan officer and colleague of Wayne Couzens convicted of rape

Former Metropolitan Police officer, Mark Tyrrell, was convicted of rape, three counts of sexual assault and perverting the course of justice at Southwark Crown Court on 27 October 2026. Tyrrell was acquitted of 13 other charges, including a further count of rape.

Tyrrell, 57, served in the Parliamentary and Diplomatic Protection Command, the same unit as Wayne Couzens, who was convicted for the kidnapping, rape and murder of Sarah Everard, and David Carrick, who was also convicted of rape.

Tyrrell had met the victim while carrying out a welfare check before consequently contacting her without a proper policing purpose to do so’. Tyrrell was suspended from duty and arrested and later resigned Five months later in 2023.

The Guardian reports it was heard in court that ‘concerns were raised’ after officers had gone to the woman’s address, for a separate reason, to find upon arrival ‘Tyrrell hiding by the side of her bed’. The former officer was found to also have been guilty of ‘perverting the court of justice of justice by attempting to delete messages with the woman’. The court was told that in one of the messages Tyrrell said he was ‘sorry’ for ‘being a sex offender’ and ‘for ruining your life by being in it’.

In April 2023 the woman reported she had been in a relationship with him for several years during which he raped and sexually assaulted her.

The convictions follow the 2023 Casey Review, which found widespread institutional failings within the Met, including misogyny and shortcomings in misconduct procedures, vetting and accountability.

The review recommended stronger vetting and measures to identify officers who might abuse their powers. In December 2025, the Mayor of London and the Met Commissioner announced an independent assessment of progress in implementing the review’s recommendations.

An investigation by the independent Office for Police Conduct (IPOC) was launched. Tyrrell was arrested and suspended from duty before resigning in September 2023.

Chief Superintendent Sarah Leach, described Tyrrell’s conduct in his position of power as ‘abhorrent’, and she thanked the victim for their ‘strength and courage’ in coming forward.
